Had its 15-point second half lead in the America East final last March held, you might have noticed that Vermont was playing its best basketball of the season. Heading into that fateful day in Stony Brook, the Catamounts had won seven straight and had scored at least 1 point per possession in 10 consecutive outings.
But while the focus – rightfully so given their history – was squarely on the Seawolves on that Saturday morning eight months ago, Vermont’s impressive performance, and the fact that they were there in the firstplace, were no fluke. And it also highlights just how amazing Jameel Warney’s 43-point effort in the Stony Brook comeback was that day.
Saturday was a chance for a few more teams to get into the action, with 36 games in total. In particular the Northeast Conference played a number of games, and one former NEC player had a huge day. Continue reading

STONY BROOK – I’m not sure how much Carson Puriefoy and Jameel Warney have taken advantage of Stony Brook’s nationally respected philosophy department in their time on Long Island, but perhaps Nietzsche and Schopenhauer were ringing through the heads of the sold-out crowd at Island Federal Credit Union Arena early in the second half Saturday morning.
“Time is a flat circle. Everything we have done we will do we will do over and over again – forever,” Nietzsche once wrote (which Puriefoy or Warney also could have picked up if they were True Detective fans). When Darren Payen hit a short jumper to put Vermont up 48-33 with 15:15 left, that circle was as flat as the crowd.
