KenPom Movement: Tennessee and Manhattan Move Up

Blow out Kentucky and win a prize! Tennessee and Manhattan join the biggest movers in my weekly look at movement in Ken Pomeroy’s rankings.

Biggest Movers This Week:

  1. Long Beach St.: +34 (128)
  2. Arkansas St.: +30 (96)
  3. Tennessee: +30 (72)
  4. Manhattan: +28 (184)
  5. Georgia St.: +26 (167)

Manhattan is on this list because the Jaspers rocked Fairfield on the road on Tuesday, 62-40. That win more than any other during their four-game winning streak helped signify that this team isn’t to be trifled with down the stretch.

Tennessee is of course on here because the Volunteers crushed Kentucky on Saturday afternoon, 88-58. You’d probably expect to see the Wildcats on the biggest fallers after that loss, but they only dropped 10 spots to 28th. Any loss to Vanderbilt on Wednesday could send UK plummeting down the rankings as KenPom has them as a 13-point favorite.

Long Beach State is 12-2 in the Big West and won games by 20 (85-65 over Cal St. Fullerton) and 40 (75-35 over UC Riverside) this week. Hence the big jump. DePaul transfer Tony Freeland isn’t quite using the possessions I thought he might since becoming eligible and healthy, but he does have a 108.6 offensive rating.

Biggest Fallers This Week:

  1. Dartmouth: -36 (308)
  2. Cal St. Fullerton: -26 (199)
  3. Southern Utah: -25 (296)
  4. Northern Kentucky: -24 (271)
  5. Hawaii: -23 (208)
  6. TCU: -23 (283)

Since beating Kansas, TCU has lost by 13 to West Virginia, 27 to Oklahoma and 34 to Iowa St. All those results do is make the win over the Jayhawks all that more improbable. The Horned Frogs are 1-11 in Big 12 play. That one win is over one of the 10 best teams in the country. Weird.

Note that Bryant is right behind this group. The Bulldogs lost both of their NEC games last week. Murray State is 10th on the down list after losing to Eastern Illinois yesterday.

Biggest Movers This Season:

  1. Utah: +178 (131)
  2. Eastern Kentucky: +174 (118)
  3. Southern: +169 (163)
  4. Towson: +167 (171)
  5. Canisius: +161 (115)

Western Illinois jumped up 22 spots this week and is sitting right outside the top movers for the season. The Leathernecks lost a critical game against South Dakota St. and now look to be on the outside looking in for the Summit League regular season title. Though they’re currently tied in the loss column. WIU is playing at an obnoxiously slow 58.3 possessions per game tempo this season.

Biggest Fallers This Season:

  1. North Texas: -142 (249)
  2. Old Dominion: -141 (273)
  3. Cleveland St.: -139 (247)
  4. Marshall: -138 (231)
  5. Drexel: -136 (177)

These teams have pretty much solidified the title of most disappointing. There’s a possibility that Penn St. could get back into the mix, but other than that unless someone really gives up down the stretch these are your underachievers according to KenPom’s preseason rankings.

Conference Update:

Not much to report here are we’re in conference play. The Ivy League slipped a little bit thanks to Dartmouth’s fall and is now tied for the third most disappointing conference with the CAA. The Big West and Pac-12 are now tied at the top again.
